<p><a name="more"></a> When not eating your local, seasonal fruits, a nice one to try is the Guava. It&#8217;s actually native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America but is now commonly grown throughout the tropics. It&#8217;s considered a superfruit because of it&#8217;s high nutrient content. It&#8217;s a great source of Vitamins C and A, dietary fiber, and folic acid as well as potassium, copper and manganese. The red-orange varieties have more pigment and thus more of the antioxidant polyphenols and carotenoids. So when you feel like you want to be in the tropics but can&#8217;t get away grab a guava and know you&#8217;ll be eating something healthy.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a> Not a commonly known, fruit the quince is related to apples and pears and is ripest in the Fall. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and fiber and numerous minerals. Because many varieties of quince are too tart to eat raw it&#8217;s often mixed with applesauce or fruit pies to enhance the flavor. My experience with quince is from a fragrant jelly made by a family friend from the trees in his yard. It&#8217;s great on toast.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a>The pomegranate is an interesting fruit that originally comes from the part of the world that includes Iran and Northern India and has been touted recently for the potential health benefits of its antioxidant rich juice.  It&#8217;s also a good source of Vitamin C and the B vitamins.  However, the really interesting thing for me is that the pomegranate seed packed with micronutrients, healthy unsaturated oils, and fiber.  So, when you start to see pomegranates available in September through February and you pop a few of those seeds in your mouth don&#8217;t just settle for the juice, eat the seed, too.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  Persimmons are in season, there are two varities that you&#8217;ll see.  One is the heart shaped Hachiya  and the other is the flat-shaped fuyu.  I prefer the fuyu because it has a less astringent taste and it&#8217;s easier to eat raw. Either way you&#8217;ll get a lot of vitamin c, b-12 or riboflavin and fiber</p>

<p>A summer fruit not to be forgotten is the Peach.  Nowadays you can find many different varieties available like donut peaches, flat peaches and, of course, the yellow and white varieties.  Peaches are a great source of vitamin C and fiber and an easy addition to your 5 to 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day.  When I was a kid my grandfather had a good friend who grew peaches and grapes in Sanger, California which is in the Central Valley near Fresno.  I always remember the peaches tasting best picked right from the tree on a hot summer day.  If you can&#8217;t do that then visit your local farmer&#8217;s market.  Enjoy your summer.  </p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  The Cherimoya is a fruit that originated in the Andean region of South America around Peru and Chile but is now grown around the world, including here in California.  It&#8217;s flavor has been described as a mixture of banana, pineapple and strawberry and so it is sometimes referred to as a &#8220;custard apple.&#8221;  It&#8217;s another fruit that is a great source of vitamin C and fiber so try a Cherimoya today.  </p>

<p><a name="more"></a> Hi I&#8217;m doctor Mark Savant and welcome to SavantMD.  Today&#8217;s wellness tip is about mangoes. Mangoes originally come from India and Southeast Asia and are prepared in a variety of ways, both sweet and savory.  Mangoes are packed with a multitude of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and beta-carotene to keep you healthy.  Even the mango peel has been found to potentially have cancer preventing substances.  One thing to note however,  there is a substance in mangoes similiar to that found in poison oak or poison ivy.  So if you get a reaction to one of those, you may have a reaction to mangoes. </p>
