<p><a name="more"></a>  If you watch sports then you&#8217;ve probably noticed more talk about concussions.  Although they&#8217;re called concussions, in the medical community they&#8217;re officially known as &#8220;mild traumatic brain injuries.&#8221; They result from a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or other part of the body that transmits an impulsive force to the head.  The signs and symptoms of a concussion can be subtle and very often go unnoticed.  You&#8217;ll typically see varying degrees of altered cognition that resolves gradually, although there doesn&#8217;t necessarily need to be a loss of consciousness, which is most often what happens in sports.   Another important factor is that on an imaging study, like a CT scan, the brain appears normal.  This means that the effects of a concussion are functional problems and not structural.  In another tip we&#8217;ll talk more about the symptoms of a concussion and what to look out for.  </p>

For those of you who haven&#8217;t done it since grade school it&#8217;s a lot harder than it looks and will give you a good cardiovascular workout. It&#8217;s good for developing coordination, balance, and strength of both the upper and lower body, and a great way to get your heart rate up. When done properly, that means bouncing on your toes, it&#8217;s a low impact exercise. Boxers have been using it for years to train so why not you? </p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  I&#8217;m Dr. Mark Savant and welcome to SavantMD. One of my fondest memories of living in France was having these small sweet oranges called Clementine during wintertime. Nowadays, they are much more available in the United States and now they are grown in California. Like their citris brethen they are high in vitamin C. So this winter enjoy some clementines.<br />

<p><a name="more"></a>September is national yoga month so it&#8217;s a great opportunity for me to let you know that yoga is a fantastic addition to just about any exercise routine.  It&#8217;s a lot more than just fancy stretching.  You&#8217;ll discover muscles you never thought you had.  It&#8217;s also a way to focus your energy and bring some calm into a stressful life.  So, this month, think about taking some yoga classes.  Even your blood pressure may thank you.</p>
