<p>A summer fruit not to be forgotten is the Peach.  Nowadays you can find many different varieties available like donut peaches, flat peaches and, of course, the yellow and white varieties.  Peaches are a great source of vitamin C and fiber and an easy addition to your 5 to 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day.  When I was a kid my grandfather had a good friend who grew peaches and grapes in Sanger, California which is in the Central Valley near Fresno.  I always remember the peaches tasting best picked right from the tree on a hot summer day.  If you can&#8217;t do that then visit your local farmer&#8217;s market.  Enjoy your summer.  </p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  If you&#8217;ve ever had gumbo then you know what okra is. This versatile and nutritious vegetable can be found in cuisines around the world from countries in tropical climates. It&#8217;s a good source of Vitamins A and C and an excellent source of fiber. In fact, it&#8217;s slippery texture, which some people are not fond of, actually makes it a fiber that is easily eliminated by the body, thus keeping your colon clean. However, when you think of okra you don&#8217;t have to think of your colon. Just think of a warm Caribbean breeze and a big pot of gumbo.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  The fava bean, also called the broad bean, is known around the world and is used in many cuisines but is only now becoming more popular in the US.  It has been called a nutrition superhero because of its high concentration of iron, fiber and protein.  Fava beans are fresh in early spring so there should be some available for you to buy at your local farmer&#8217;s market not.  Two health related words of caution: those people who have a hereditary deficiency of the enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) can have an acute hemolytic anemia that is potentially fatal where the blood cells break down suddenly and stop functioning; also fava beans are high in the substance tyramine which should not be taken with certain antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors. </p>

<p><a name="more"></a> I was at the farmer&#8217;s market with my family the over the weekend and noticed that endive is coming back in season. Endive is a bitter lettuce in the chicory family but has a very mild taste that goes well with a simple vinaigrette. As with other lettuces it is a good source of vitamins A and K as well as folate and fiber. Vitamins A and K, being fat soluble vitamins, are better absorbed by the body when eaten with a little fat. That&#8217;s why the vinaigrette, with a good olive oil for example, will help you get all the nutrients from the lettuce. So, this time of year, enjoy some endive and have it with a little olive oil.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a>  The Cherimoya is a fruit that originated in the Andean region of South America around Peru and Chile but is now grown around the world, including here in California.  It&#8217;s flavor has been described as a mixture of banana, pineapple and strawberry and so it is sometimes referred to as a &#8220;custard apple.&#8221;  It&#8217;s another fruit that is a great source of vitamin C and fiber so try a Cherimoya today.  </p>

<p><a name="more"></a> Bell peppers come in a variety of colors but the most common ones seen available are green, red, and orange or yellow.  Because they lack the chemical capsaicin they do not cause the same burning feeling in your mouth as their chili pepper cousins and so are sometimes referred to as sweet peppers.  The red peppers contain more of the antioxidants lycopene and beta carotene and vitamin C than the green varieties.  The orange peppers contain even more vitamins and nutrients than the red peppers and also have vitamin A.  Any color you choose, however, is a good choice to maintain your good health.  </p>

<p><a name="more"></a> I think we can all agree that having fiber in our diets is good for our health but a new study has found that the fiber in whole grains, when consumed in quantities of 30g per day or more, has even more benefits than preventing heart disease and colon cancer. In this study those people aged 50-71 who got a lot of fiber from whole grains were also less likely to die from respiratory or infectious diseases as well. Now the exact reasons why whole grain fiber was able to do this is not yet known. But I think it&#8217;s pretty safe to say that it sure wouldn&#8217;t hurt to eat oatmeal more often or to have that sandwich on sprouted bread.</p>

<p><a name="more"></a> Today&#8217;s wellness tip is about pears.  For me, pears are a nice reminder that winter is not devoid of sweet fruits.  Pears are a great source of vitamin C and fiber because of their low concentration of Salicylate and benzoate are much last allergenic, which is why you see pears used a lot in baby foods.  Just a reminder, most of the vitamin C and fiber is contained in the skin.  So wash it well and eat the skin too.  Enjoy some pears now.</p>
