HPV is the human papilloma virus and is the cause of genital warts but there are also some types of this virus that can cause cervical cancer in women. Recent studies also indicate that HPV can cause throat or tonsillar cancer as well. Here are 3 quick tips to protect yourself. 1. Use condoms during sexual intercourse. This will decrease your risk significantly for contracting HPV. 2. Women should get PAP smears every one to three years. Early detection of precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix will reduce the progression to full blown cancer. And 3. There are vaccines now (Gardasil by Merck and Cervarix by Glaxo-Smith Kline) that are approved for use in girls and women ages 6-26 and to prevent genital warts in boys (Gardasil only). HPV is the most common STD so protect yourself, get your PAP smears when indicated, and consider the vaccine.
