Sex is an important part of a healthy life but is often overlooked in people who have just experienced some event related to heart disease like a heart attack or bypass surgery. These patients will either forget or be too embarrassed to ask their Cardiologist when they can resume sexual activity and sometimes health professionals will forget to bring it up. Now the American Heart association has come up with guidelines for resuming sexual activity for heart patients. The approach is one of common sense. Since having sex speeds up the heart like exercising a heart patient who can climb two flights of stairs or walk briskly should be able to start having sex again without problem. People who survive a heart attack can generally resume sexual activity as soon as a week later while those who’ve undergone major heart surgery like a bypass should wait at least 6-8 weeks. Minor invasive procedures like angioplasty requires only a few days of abstinence. In the end it’s always wise to talk with your health professional first before having sex again but don’t be afraid to ask.
