So here’s something I think most people would know intuitively: that people who work in a friendly environment and feel supported by their colleagues live longer. This is the conclusion from a study in Israel that looked at over 800 people over 20 years and had them answer detailed questions about their work environment over the course of the study period. Anybody with existing health problems was excluded from the study. As human beings we are social by nature and we function better when we work in a supportive environment. Increased stress and anxiety can have a very real, negative impact on our health, and I’ve seen this among my own patients who’ve come in with problems ranging from insomnia and anxiety to chest pain and high blood pressure, all caused by stress at work. Now, if you have chest pain or some other serious symptom a work up should be done to make sure it’s there is no other cause but if you’re unhappy at work make an appointment with your doctor to stay on top of your health.
