Once again, there is another study that suggests that eating olive oil is good for your health. This study, done in France, looked at people over 65 who were considered heavy consumers of olive oil, meaning they cooked with it and used it as a dressing, and compared them to those who didn’t. After factoring in the difference for diet, exercise, and chronic health problems like hypertension and diabetes, the researchers found the those high consumers of olive oil were 41% less likely to suffer a stroke. This is great news for people who eat olive oil. I think these results are just another confirmation that olive oil has real health benefits, however, I wouldn’t conclude that olive oil alone is the way to avoid a stroke. As with any health promoting food, it always works best when eaten as part of a diet that is heavy on fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains in smaller portions, and when coupled with regular physical activity.
