A recent report on one’s risk for dying from cancer showed that the biggest factor is level of education. It doesn’t mean that people who’ve been to college have any special knowledge from a class they took but, rather, are less likely to participate in risky behaviors like smoking, have better access to healthy food, not be overweight, and have regular doctor visits. So it appears that health in general is stratified more along socioeconomic lines than racial ones. Since the health of our community at large affects all of us, ultimately, I think a basic place to start is to promote access to fresh food to the parts of our cities that have been lacking in them. The debate on universal health care is ongoing with strong opinions on either side. However, the more immediate solution of improving a person’s diet and access to healthy food is something on which we can all agree. It all starts with the stomach.
