So, when I look for topics I try to find ones that helpful and timely. I also like to choose some from interesting questions I’m asked in the office. Every Spring I’m asked about the pungent smell in the urine after eating Asparagus. Now, I could tell you about all the health benefits of Asparagus, like its high concentration of folate, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber, or that it can act as a diurectic (it makes you pee more) but what’s probably most interesting about it is that it makes your urine stink almost immediately. And even more interesting is that this was studied in 3 separate places. The substances that are responsible for the smell were identified (methanethiol and dimethyl thiol being the main culprits) and it was found that not all people could smell it although everybody tested had the substances in their urine. So, if you can’t smell it, somebody else can.
