There has been some very interesting news out of Boston, recently about a new test that has been developed to screen for cancer cells in people who are being treated for cancer. The test uses a small sample of blood, just a few teaspoons, and runs over a grid that is designed to stick to the cancer cells and let the normal ones pass through. The use of this test is now being studied in a few major cancer centers like Sloan-Kettering in New York, MD Anderson in Houston, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. It will be used to measure a person’s response to treatment by looking for a drop in the number of cancer cells present. Another, very interesting potential use for this test could be in cancer screening. So, before getting a colonoscopy you would start off with a blood test to check for any cancer cells that might be present.
