Make sure your doctor knows your family heart history.

An interesting study just came out about the connection between family history and a person’s risk for developing heart disease. It found that regardless of where a person came from, diet and lifestyle changes, and even some genes known to be associated with heart disease, someone who had at least one parent with heart disease was 1.8 times more likely to develop heart disease, even more so if it happened to both parents or if it happened before age 50. What this means is that there are many as yet unknown factors that contribute to heart disease but it’s easy enough for doctors to ask you about your family history and specifically whether your parents suffered from heart attacks or strokes, and it doesn’t need a blood test. That way you can start to make changes early to help prevent heart disease in the future.
