April is Sexually Transmitted Disease Month so for those who are sexually active and not in a monogamous relationship it would be wise to get tested for STD’s at least once a year. The diseases that I check for typically when people come to my office are HIV, Herpes, Syphillis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. In women it is easier to check for the Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV, than in men because it can be done on a routine PAP smear. Other than abstinence, the best way to protect yourself is to use condoms. Ask your doctor about getting tested or visit your local public health clinic where anonymous testing may be available.
