It’s not the most glamorous of subjects but ear wax, also known as cerumen, is important for good ear health. It protects the ear canal and ear drum from water damage, trauma, and infection. It also traps dust and other foreign particles and helps to get rid of bacteria. Some people produce more cerumen than others but it should not be removed unless it causes pain, hearing loss, or some other disturbance. If it does need to be removed then using mineral oil with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide followed by a warm water flush can help. If there is any pain or cut in the ear canal then hydrogen peroxide should not be used. For ear wax that is older and more impacted a visit to your doctor after some mineral oil soaks may be the best and safest way to get it out.
