Did you know that San Francisco has the highest liver cancer rate in the nation and that the majority of cases occur in Asian people with hepatitis B? As an Asian American and former chairman of the Asian physicians group at St. Mary’s Medical Center here in San Francisco this is a subject that hits close to home.
In this series of videos, SavantMD features conversations with patient, Joy, as well as, video visits with Dr. Tang, and, next week, SavantMD Alternative and Chinese Medicine physician, E. McDowell. Access the full series here.

As a doctor in a city where more than one third of residents are Asian, I always make it a point to screen all my Asian and Pacific Islander patients for hepatitis B, which can gravely affect one in 10 and can cause liver cancer and death. I strongly encourage all my colleagues to screen their patients as well. This is a disease that can be prevented and I’m committed to do my part to stop it. We should make screening for Hepatitis B part of our standard of care.
San Francisco Hep B Free is a citywide campaign to turn San Francisco into the first hepatitis B free city in the nation. This unprecedented campaign will provide free and low-cost hepatitis B testing and vaccinations to Asian and Pacific Islander (API) adults at locations throughout San Francisco. SavandMD supports SF Hep B Free.
We applaud all those already on SF Hep B Free Clincian’s Honor Roll. It will run on a regular basis in publications including the San Francisco Medical Society Magazine, SF Examiner, Korea Times, Philippine News and World Journal.
Sign up on the honor roll here. The SF Hep B Free Honor Roll Project is being coordinated through the AsianWeek Foundation in Partnership with the SF Department of Public Health. • About Dr. Savant
