Most people are aware that getting a good night’s sleep is vital to maintaining good health. Of course, for most of us that’s easier said than done. Busy lifestyles with work, family and fun leave little time for one of the most important activities we need to do. Here are a few things to consider to get the most out your sleep; things we refer to as “Sleep Hygiene.”

During sleep our bodies work on making small, regenerative repairs and our subconscious works through problems using dreams, most of which we don’t remember. The first thing to remember is that the bedroom, as a sanctuary, is for sleep or sex and if you are doing neither you should not be there. It’s best to avoid reading, eating, or watching TV from bed, especially just before you go to sleep.

If you are having trouble getting to sleep or you wake up and can’t get back to sleep in less than 30 minutes get out of bed and leave your bedroom. Go to a comfortable chair in a dimly lit room and return to bed when you’re sleepy. Our bodies like patterns so if you get into the habit of lying awake in bed then your body will adjust to that pattern and you’ll wake up regularly.
Finally, staying active during the day, avoiding heavy late night meals, and keeping daytime naps to under an hour can all help to making your nighttime sleep more productive. • About Dr. Savant
